Announcing

The Muriel Siebert High Water Women Campaign for Financial Literacy After School

High Water Women is partnering with Muriel "Mickie" Siebert, CEO of Siebert Securities and the first woman to ever have a seat on the New York Stock Exchange to provide financial literacy training to NYC youth. Mickie has dedicated her personal resources to developing and implementing a financial literacy curriculum in 100 New York City public schools.  By joining forces with High Water Women, we will bring this professional curriculum to many more middle and high school students, by partnering with The After-School Corporation and our other enriched education philanthropy partners. Eventually, we will need twenty (20) volunteers to roll out the program in this upcoming fall semester.  The volunteers will be trained in the curriculum and in dealing with middle and high school students.  It will involve 5 hours of training and 22 hours of teaching.  This is a fabulous opportunity for women in financial services to make a real difference in the lives of NYC youth.

DreamYard’s Bronx Writes Poetry Slam

Judges are needed for poetry slam competitions!

Dates (choose one):

Tuesday – Friday: May 26, 27, 28, and 29;

Select times available week of June 1st.

Times (choose one 1 ½ hour slot):

Each Day: 9 am, 10:30 am, 12 pm, OR 1:30 pm.

 Please note:

  • Judges are strongly encouraged to arrive 20 minutes prior to start time to review judging guidelines (i.e. 9 am = 8:40).
  • All schools are easily accessible to public transportation. Alternatively, judges may arrive early at the DreamYard office (672 Gerard Avenue; right next to Yankee Stadium), and a DreamYard staff member will drive to the school with the volunteer(s).

Location: Each competition is hosted at a Bronx based elementary, middle or high school. Based on availability, location and directions will be provided.

Description: DreamYard’s Bronx Writes poetry project places professional poets in K-12 grade schools for yearlong residencies. Students analyze the work of outstanding poets and learn essential creative writing and literacy skills. Twice per year, the residencies culminate in a Bronx-wide poetry slam competition facilitated through videoconferencing. DreamYard is seeking volunteers to help judge these exciting competitions! Judges will be part of a panel of educators and student poets based at a DreamYard partner school. The judging process is straightforward and accessible—you don’t have to be a poet or writer to be a great judge!

Poetry slam is a competitive form of poetry that emphasizes both writing and performance skills.  Each school is represented by a slam team, and the entire competition is facilitated through videoconferencing.  The teams are scored by a live panel of student and adult judges. The winning teams will be honored at an awards ceremony and open mic slam at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theater in June.

The TEAK Fellowship: Professional Mentors Database

Date: Applications accepted on an ongoing basis
To help Alumni of The TEAK Fellowship succeed in their academic and professional endeavors, TEAK has established the Alumni Career Center sponsored by Societe Generale Corporate & Investment Banking. The Center will help equip Alumni with the tools and resources necessary to obtain meaningful jobs during college and to embark successfully on professional and advanced academic tracks after college graduation.

As part of the services offered through the Career Center, TEAK is assembling a directory of successful professionals from various industries to be professional mentors. Mentors agree to serve as resources for Alumni by providing career advice, granting informational interviews, conducting practice interviews with students, and reviewing resumes and cover letters. Mentors are not expected or required to provide Alumni with employment, rather, this is an opportunity for Alumni to strengthen their personal networks and make connections in their fields of interest.

Being a part of the Professional Mentors Database is ideal for busy professionals who want to share their skills and knowledge with talented young people. Please check out these links (FAQ / Application) to learn more about this volunteer opportunity, or to start an application for the Professional Mentors Database.
